Cheers for the postage! In the intervening period 'twixed my sending the tip about the unity-pbr-themes and the present Andrew from webupd8 has written a simple script that allows you to install/switch-between/revert to Ambiance with the click of a button and a quick logout/login.
Another advantage is that it replaces the Ambiance gtkrc as well so sudoed apps will theme properly.
